Since I’m still grieving the loss of the Buffy spinoff that never was, I’m cautiously optimistic about Hulu’s upcoming reboot of . But everything we’ve heard about this new show has been very promising. For starters, it’s being spearheaded by Ryan Coogler, the Oscar-winning writer-director of Sinners, so there’s a visionary filmmaker at the helm. that the new series will strike a nice balance between standalone monster-of-the-week episodes and a larger, serialized, overarching mythology, just like Chris Carter’s original show did.
In February, , and it’s lined up a spectacular cast to rival the original. Just like the flagship show, the new X-Files series will revolve around two mismatched FBI agents who become unlikely partners when they’re assigned to a long-forgotten underground department investigating UFOs and paranormal activity. The two leads will be played by The Piano Lesson’s Danielle Deadwyler and Yesterday’s Himesh Patel, who are each individually as brilliant, talented, and charming as Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, and whose on-screen chemistry will hopefully be just as strong.
But it’s not just the two leads; the reboot has also announced an impressive roster of A-list guest stars, and lots of guest stars means lots of case-of-the-week episodes. The pilot hasn’t even been made yet, but .
The X-Files' Impressive Guest Star Lineup Means We're Getting Lots Of Case-Of-The-Week Episodes
As The X-Files reboot’s pilot episode gets underway, Hulu has announced an impressive roster of guest stars for the new show. These guest actors include Reservation Dogs’ Devery Jacobs, Killers of the Flower Moon’s Tantoo Cardinal, Lochlyn Munro from the Scary Movie franchise, Joel Montgrand (a.k.a. Eddie Qavvik from True Detective: Night Country), and young, unknown Sofia Grace Clifton.
There are also some more famous faces lined up, like screen legend Steve Buscemi (who also guest-starred as himself on The Studio), Ben Foster from Hell or High Water, and for Best Supporting Actress for her chilling turn as the villainous witch Aunt Gladys in Zach Cregger’s horror blockbuster Weapons. And those are all just in the pilot!
The extensive casting of guest stars for , and the fact that some of those guest stars are big names, suggests that this new series will have a heavy focus on a revolving door of one-off characters. The original series split its time between the overarching “mytharc” and self-contained case-of-the-week episodes that saw Mulder and Scully tackling a new monster or supernatural threat.
Aunt Gladys In The X-Files Sounds Like A Dream
Out of all the announced guest stars for The X-Files reboot, the most exciting addition to the cast is Amy Madigan. The thought of Madigan playing an eccentric, cackling monster like Gladys in the world of The X-Files sounds like a match made in heaven. The witchcraft of Weapons might be a bit too out there for The X-Files (although the original show did deal with witchcraft in season 4, episode 6, “Sanguinarium”), but a character like Gladys would be perfect for this show. She’s quirky, weird, terrifying, and above all, utterly compelling.

Hulu could still pull the plug on The X-Files reboot, a la New Sunnydale, and even if the show does eventually get made, it could be a disappointment, so I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high. But everything about this revival, from Coogler’s involvement behind the scenes to to all these cool new guest stars attached to the pilot episode, is a promising sign of things to come. Let’s just hope the reboot can stick the landing and reinvigorate this franchise for a new generation.
