The wait for may not be as long as any of us expected. After Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, many assumed the final chapter of the trilogy was still years and years away, but a recent update around the game's planned release date confirms what we never dared to hope: this game is so very close.

Late last year, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Naoki Hamaguchi recently actually confirmed that he and Tetsuya Nomura have narrowed the title of Part 3 to , and indicated that development is coming along smoother than a Chocobo skating across a sea of butter. Of course, video game development is hard, and things can change on a dime. Fortunately, it seems this is not the case with Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3

In a recent interview with , Hamaguchi confirmed that development is "proceeding on time and on schedule", and that we can expect an official announcement soon. I don't believe for a second that a 2026 release date is possible, but 2027 seems all but confirmed, right?

"What I can say is that development itself is proceeding on time and on schedule," Hamaguchi explained. "We believe it’ll become a title we can deliver with confidence as the culmination of the trilogy. We know many fans are eagerly waiting, and preparations toward the announcement are steadily underway. Please look forward to it just a little longer."

Hamaguchi is currently speaking to press about the upcoming Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which you can actually check out via . I would imagine that once this port releases on June 3, all attention will turn to the end of the trilogy.

In an interview with back in October 2026, Hamaguchi said that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 was coming on very well indeed, so it's incredibly encouraging to hear this is still the case.

"It’s something really satisfying that gamers can get their teeth into, and it’ll be just a brilliant experience that it really should be and has to be," he said last year. "So we’re going to work on that, brush that up even further, and then deliver it in the not-too-distant future. You really can look forward to that climax of the series, and it’ll be exactly what you want it to be. So don’t worry about that. It’s coming, and it’s just as good as you think it is. I’m very confident in the game that I’m making there."

Place your bets now on what the official title of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will be. My money is on Final Fantasy 7 Return, but I expect we'll find out for sure before the end of 2026. Watch this space.
