remains one of the best games in the beloved fantasy RPG series, with the game bringing in a new millenium in a very big way when it launched back in 2000. As such, it's a little odd that we never got a direct sequel to play through, though it is obviously a closed and finished narrative in its own right.

The game had some of the more memorable cast members from the franchise as a whole, and the gameplay was good, if a little slow in areas. Though there are plenty of rumors swirling that a remake of the game is on the way after gets done with , the game very much stands alone right now. Fortunately, that's all about to change, and it's in a medium you might not have expected at all.

is a 2D animated television series that's currently in production, which as the name may suggest, serves as a direct sequel to the events of the game. Vivi is arguably the biggest element of the original that they are drawing on, with his children taking center stage in this latest project.

According to the Wikipedia page for the show, the premise is as follows: "The children of Vivi Ornitier—Mel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala, and Doc—are the last black mages in the four continents. Living in the city of Alexandria, the children live a peaceful life, until, one day, Koln discovers Mel frozen like a statue—could the tragic legacy of their father be finally catching up to them?"

It's a compelling enough narrative approach and one that could easily see other iconic characters from the game return as animated characters on television.

The project has been through some tough times in recent years, with original French production company Cyber Group Studios falling away (for as yet unexplained reasons). The show is now under the control and guidance of EuroVisual, with a purported 2028 release date currently being targeted.

The show is also set to run for ten episodes in its first season (which is the only one confirmed so far) of around 22 minutes apiece. Other than that, we don't know too much about what it will be like, so expect the big reveal to draw a lot of attention.

The future of the rumored Final Fantasy IX remake is less clear, but given how successful the other remake projects for the franchise have been, it would be a surprise if we never got it. That said, there are obvious titles that they want to hit first, so we may have to sit tight and wait a while to get our hands on this classic once again.
