's exclusivity problem is about to go from bad to worse. In recent years, the former console line has made overtures to turn from its longstanding policy of console exclusivity: it's brought a plethora of first-party games to alternate platforms, like mobile phones, PC, and TVs through Xbox cloud streaming, and bringing classic .

Now, though, Xbox may be walking back its move away from exclusivity. While nothing's confirmed just yet, if the rumors are true, Xbox exclusives could be on their way back, and that's a bad thing for the company and the consumer both.

Xbox May Be Bringing Back Exclusives

Microsoft Is Having "Very Big Discussions"

According to Windows Central editor Jez Corden on his XB2 podcast, as spotted by Charlieintel on , "There are very, very big discussions regarding exclusivity internally at Xbox." Of course, this is one unsubstantiated opinion of an industry insider, and there's ambiguity about what those conversations could entail and how far along they've gotten.

But regardless, it sounds like Xbox is considering a return to exclusivity. Whether that'd be for its first-party properties like Halo, its relatively recent acquisitions like Bethesda and Activision, or the myriad other third-party games it publishes is not abundantly clear. What is clear, though, is that this could spell trouble for Xbox going forward.

Why Exclusives Are A Terrible Idea

Bad For Everyone

Of course, the point of exclusivity is to sell consoles. Would anyone buy a Nintendo Switch if not for Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, and Animal Crossing, when more powerful handhelds with bigger game libraries dominate the competition?

But Microsoft is much bigger than a console brand; it's also a publisher. A move away from exclusivity might sell fewer consoles, to be sure, but it'd also sell more copies of major game releases to a much bigger player base. Eventually, that might balance out.

Console sales generally taper off as a generation's shelf life starts to wind down. But individual game sales can peak multiple times throughout that same period of time. It might take a few years, but a non-exclusive strategy might be better for Xbox in the long run.

Besides, exclusives are problematic for consumers. Exclusives let console manufacturers be lazy, offering a product that has the same specs and features as their competitors'. When you choose PlayStation or Xbox, you're not choosing which piece of hardware actually offers you more; you're choosing which set of exclusives you like better.

Most players have already made that choice, and it's unlikely that anyone will jump ship, especially in the current console market. PlayStation and Xbox consoles have both undergone serious price hikes in the last year or two, and, with , it's unlikely that a return to exclusives would convince many to shell out hundreds of dollars without a meaningful increase in hardware capability.

If Xbox does insist on exclusivity, it could be bad news for the multitude of game studios it now owns. The fact of the matter is that by all estimates, PlayStation has a bigger share of the console market than Xbox. If a game is limited to the smaller console, it'll sell worse, and lose more money for the studio that made it, resulting in more .

Of course, we should take this rumor with a grain of salt; there's no guarantee that anyone at Microsoft is seriously considering a return to exclusivity. However, with major implications for game sales, studio longevity, consumer options, and the continued existence of the Xbox brand, everyone should raise an eyebrow at rumblings of console exclusivity.
